Smurfs Enlisted to Help Boost New York Tourism

Travel Mole: Little blue men in white hats have been drafted to help promote New York as a family-friendly destination.

The city’s tourism body, NYC & Company, has decided to make The Smurfs the new ambassadors for family travel after the cartoon characters filmed their first 3-D movie in the Big Apple.

It has devised a ‘Smurf-tinerary’, which includes some of the locations visited by the little blue folk during their adventures in New York City. Manhattan’s family must-dos include Belvedere Castle and the Boathouse Restaurant in Central Park, the US’s oldest toy store FAO Schwarz, Bronx Zoo in the Bronx and the Staten Island Children’s Museum.

The Smurfs will make their first 3D appearance on the big screen in Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation’s hybrid live-action and animated family comedy, The Smurfs. The Smurfs will be released in UK cinemas on August 10.

This week has been designated Smurfs Week NYC, with special themed events, exhibits and activities taking place across the city.
