Summer: Time for Sand Castle Contests

USA Today: What do you get when you set a bunch of architect-types loose on a big pile of sand?

Everything from grainy renditions of King Midas to a flag-waving astronaut, to name just two of the structures that took shape Saturday on East Beach in Galveston, Texas. For 25 years, the American Institute of Architects' Houston chapter has staged what's billed as one of the world's largest amateur sand castle competitions. (There are professional sand castle builders? Who knew?)

This year, more than 60 teams drafted plans and spent up to five hours shoveling and sculpting. Winner of the top prize, the Golden Bucket, was Jacobs, a Houston engineering firm, with an elaborate medieval castle complex guarded by a dragon.

Given that sand as an artistic medium is ephemeral, you'd have to scoot over to East Beach fast to see these artworks. Or plan ahead to take in some upcoming sand-sculpting events this summer and fall.

Among them:

Master Sand Sculpting Competition, Hampton Beach, N.H., June 17-29

Sandsations Sand Sculpture Contest in Long Beach, Wash., July 20-24

The U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition in Imperial Beach, Calif., July 24

North American Sandsculpting Championship in Virginia Beach, Va., Sept. 30-Oct. 2

The American Sandsculpting Festival Championship in Fort Meyers Beach, Fla., Nov. 2-6
