It's that time of year again, where we get 'best of the year' lists and whatever from every website, magazine, and news program out there, so let's jump on that bandwagon and get to it. Up next, we have Movie of the Year.
Sadly, there is no Batman movie this year and I have been told I am not allowed to give this award to a movie preview that came out only days ago. Also, we are not a website that cares to give awards to hoity-toity art movies just to make ourselves look cultured. No, this is about what movie entertained us the most.
There were plenty of candidates. The last of the Harry Potters came out and we probably could have Return of the King'd it with a 'career achievement' nod. The comedies were spectacularly bad, so they're out. Thor and Captain America were entertaining, but not quite worthy. And the franchise sequels (and prequel, fuck you X-Men: First Class) were flat-out bad.
So, your winner is...
Yep, Super 8. It had everything you could ask for from a summer blockbuster: huge effects, great cast, a warmth at the center of a horrifyingly enjoyable plot, and the dibsiest leading lady of the year.
