Hotel Chatter: If you long for the days of your youth, when you could spend the day playing in the arcade, the Hollywood Roosevelt offers an entertainment option so that won't have to fight with 11-year-olds to get some game action.
Opened by nightlife visionaries Med Abrous and Marc Rose, The Spare Room, a dark, cozy, upscale gaming parlour and cocktail lounge, where you can play without mom telling you it's time to go home. The Spare Room, which sits in the mezzanine level of the hotel, has an old rec room vibe with two vintage bowling lanes, games galore and an old-school photo booth.
If you want to bowl, it costs $100 an hour to rent a lit-up lane for six to eight people and outfit them with custom-made bowling shoes. Instead of a computerized scoring system, you can track the game with chalkboards.
There's also an array of board games to play, some of which are built into cocktail tables. You can challenge your pals to backgammon, chess, Connect Four, dominoes, Jenga, Yahtzee, Scrabble, Monopoly, card games and more. Another fun activity is trying to find the photo booth, which is hidden among the walls. For a strip of black and white photos, it'll cost you $5.
One thing that isn't like your rec room of yesteryear is that you won't have soda as your only drinking option. There's a bar amid all of the games that serves handcrafted cocktails. Bites will soon be available as well.
For those who want to play, The Spare Room is open 6pm to 2am Monday and Wednesday to Saturday.
