Demi Moore and ex-husband Bruce Willis‘s middle child Scout Willis made her debut in NYC this week as a singer. Performing a show at Rockwood Music Hall in NYC, NY with her new band Gus + Scout, Willis took the center stage spotlight as an emerging chanteuse. After creating a loud media buzz about her outrageous ? but apparently fictionalized ? statements on Twitter, Scout Willis now has something people should be talking about: The girl can really sing. Sporting a clean, blonde bob and a sleek, black spaghetti-strap dress, Willis, 20, the daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, took to the stage Thursday night as the lead vocalist in the band Gus + Scout at Manhattan's Rockwood Music Hall. The other half of the duo is Willis's classmate at Brown, Gus Wenner, son of Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner. No stranger to performing with Hollywood offspring, Wenner reportedly was in a band in 2009 with another Brown student, Steven Spielberg's daughter Sasha. As for Willis, she follows last week's performance of older sister Rumer, 23, who sang in a Hollywood club. As Gus + Scout kicked off Thursday's show with the bluesy, upbeat "Me and James" (see video below of them singing their song), Willis motioned to the sound staff that her mic was too loud. Indeed, Willis's forceful high notes did sound at first like she had something to prove. She needn't have been so concerned. If any doubts existed whether Willis could soften it up, she put them to rest with the emotional ballad, "Don't Bother You Much." Between songs, a voice from the crowd of about 50 (including DJ Samantha Ronson) shouted, "You guys are doing great!" Willis reacted by giggling with her bandmates, showing no signs of jitters. The set of about six songs closed with a cover of Otis Redding's "These Arms of Mine," which the two had to restart a few times. Willis urged the band to push through mistakes, playfully telling them, "Let's fucking go with it!" The audience, charmed, laughed along with Willis, and cheered her on through the end of the song.
Aww … well, good for her. It's always hard for children of Hollywood stars to step out and find success on their own (which is why many of them change their names in order to be taken more seriously). It's no secret that there is a lot of drama going on in Scout‘s private family life (Twitter controversy, notwithstanding) so it's nice to see her doing her thing … and well, apparently. I guess we'll have to wait and see if Scout can make a serious go of this music career but … I wish her well.
