... First the football. The Ravens handed the Pats a stay of execution for two more weeks. That's really all it was. The Pats didn't earn it and proved once again that their offense, despite the big numbers, isn't exactly elite. Every time they've faced a good-to-premiere defense, they've needed the defense to bail them out, or in other cases, simply lost. Like earlier this year against the same Giants team that is going to smack them in the face next week. Tip to bettors the world over, take the Giants moneyline and laugh your way to the bank 2 weeks from now. And for all the media-types who are going to drill the rematch story down everyone's throats for the next 13 days, no, the possibility of winning this Super Bowl wouldn't take the sting out of 2007 one bit. That was a failure beyond failures and will never stop hurting...
... The death of Joe Paterno was a tough one to swallow this weekend. Certainly not because it seemed too soon or anything, he was 85 years old and going through the kind of treatment that would be hell on a 30 year old's body, but because it never gave him the chance to tell his whole story. It doesn't matter to me which side of the fence that story would have landed on so much as just having all of the facts clear of the trial. Right now the tarnish on his legacy is mostly speculation, even with the Washington Post piece and people the world over are jumping on his still-warm body as if he was a monster. I just wish we'd known how to truly remember a man that did so much good and got one huge thing wrong before he passed...
... My Idiot Brother was a charming little movie where I got to see the love of my life kiss Rashida Jones. The wife was not pleased.
